Jun 23, 2009 · I saw some of these changes within myself in 2008 while planning another Philmont Scout Ranch trek for that August. I've gone a number of times and am very familiar with what to expect there and figured this would be much the same. However, in late spring, Backpacking Light announced a new series of Wilderness Trekking School courses.

Oct 7, 2016 · Is the standard pad sufficient for Philmont? We will be testing these (and all gear) over the fall/winter/spring to make sure; however, the insulated pads are available on a current Mass Drop for $65. Another consideration would be to add an 1/8″ GG pad to the regular pad. Thank you for your thoughts. Terry

If try you use this as a primary navigation tool at Philmont, you are a fool and consider yourself warned not to do that.

Mar 12, 2018 · Pick a stove that can safely support Philmont’s 8-quart (or 6-qt) pot with 2, 3 or 4 quarts of water plus food (depending on crew size and package directions). Many Philmont camps are above 8,000 feet, some above 10,000.

Apr 19, 2006 · I hope I can offer a bit of insight on Philmont’s gear reasoning. I was scout at Philmont in 1985 and 1987 and a Ranger in 1990. I have since worked as an instructor with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) from 2001 to 2003. The institutional requirements of the school setting heavily depend on liability and risk management.

Oct 19, 2010 · In the summer of 1972, when I was 16, my father put me on the Greyhound bus that would take me from Lewiston, Idaho to Cimarron, New Mexico, home of Philmont Scout Ranch, a place about which I knew almost nothing, my attendance owing only to an unclaimed scholarship offered by our local Scout council. I didn't really want to go.

Oct 28, 2021 · Our crew arrived a Philmont 2 days early to acclimate at Basecamp and greeted by a Noahic rainstorm. Some of the Scouts found their rainwear was inadequate and upgraded to various Red Ledge products available at the Philmont store. After Philmont, many of them continued to wear the Red Ledge parkas for snow camping and other outings.

May 31, 2019 · On Philmont Scout Ranch all authorized camps have sumps and you are expected / required to disposal of all gray water in them. Off the Ranch on adjoining property, that some treks go into, there are no sumps and you are to broadcast gray water over a large area 200 feet away from camps, trails and surface water.

Nov 18, 2015 · That being said, I think a senior Scout who has reduced his pack weigh to well under 20 lbs would be fine with trail runners with a high grip sole. I usually recommend Moab Ventilator non GoreTex mid tops. There might be local sporting goods stores who would offer a 10 or 15% Scout discount.
