Authorities say hantavirus is blamed in the death of Gene Hackman’s wife, Betsy Arakawa. The rare virus is spread by contact with rodents or their urine or feces.

New Mexico medical investigators estimated Arakawa died Feb. 11, but she appeared to have contacted the clinic the next day, a sheriff's official said.
