Federal budget cuts are taking a toll on South Florida's national parks, resulting in staff reductions and raising concerns about the visitor experience. The cuts come as President Donald Trump pushes to shrink the size of the federal government.

Florida has 29 national wildlife refuges, including the Indian River Lagoon’s Pelican Island, which was the first national refuge established in 1903 by President Theodore Roosevelt.
