Chuck Schumer caves on shutdown fight, says that would be ‘far worse’ than GOP plan
Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer on Thursday evening backed off his shutdown threat and said he will vote to end a filibuster of the Republicans’ spending bill, providing a list of arguments that gave a green light to other Senate Democrats to do the same.
Schumer certainly orchestrated his surrender well—a speech to the Senate, a press conference, and an op-ed in ‘The New York Times.’ He never can say he wasn’t allowed to make his case.
After announcing that he be a no vote on the proposed spending plan -- a decision that could have led to a government shutdown -- Schumer backed down, saying from the floor he would vote yes.
