Rice was predominantly a catcher during his rise through the Yankees’ farm system. If anything, the depth of catching talent within the Yankees’ system led to Rice playing more first base in the minor leagues. It was the only way he could get consistent at-bats and continue to grow offensively.

Ben Rice is a natural catcher, but he learned first in the minors last year and replaced an injured Anthony Rizzo at the position midway through the season.
